Think of all the ways we use the word, first.
It's the first building on the right.
We wanted to talk to you first.
I'm always first in line.
I liked the first album better.
Primeiro, primeira in Portuguese (first) can take the meaning of before as well as literally: the first. The unusual thing about this is the placement. Unlike other adjectives, primeiro, primeira in Portuguese gets placed in the same word-order as it does in it's English translation. Look at how consistent it is:
É o primeiro prédio à direita.
It's the first building on the right.
Queríamos falar com você primeiro.
We wanted to talk to you first.
Sou sempre a primeira pessoa na fila.
I'm always the first person in line.
Gostei mais do primeiro CD dele.
I liked his first album better.
Remembering this will make it EASY to use. You don't need to think about the placement - it's the same as in English!
