Portuguese Plural for M and ÃO endings

singular-plural-m-ao-endings

You can safely use the letter s to make words into the plural, but not always. When forming the portuguese plural for M and ÃO endings, you have to follow the rules.

For words that end in an m, replace the m with an ns.

Like this:

a bagagem > Quantas bagagens o senhor tem?
o jovem > As jovens foram para a praia.

The M > Ns.
I can't think of any exceptions to this rule.

What about words ending with ?
These always go like this: aõ > ões

Well, almost. But don't worry about the rare exceptions - stay within the mainstream until you're fluent.

The pronunciation is oys or, ois. The video below provides an example of this pronunciation.

o avião > Todos os aviões estão atrasados.
o campeão > Eles são campeões.
