the conditional tense

In Brazilian Portuguese, the conditional tense (also called future of the preterit) is mostly regular — it’s formed by adding the same set of endings to the infinitive form of the verb:

-ia, -ia, -íamos, -iam

It’s used to express, “would”.

She said she would do it tomorrow. ➜ Ela disse que fazeria amanhã.

Forming
-ar ~er ~ir ending verbs all take the same form:
  • Eu trabalharia. ➜ I would work.
  • Ela trabalharia. ➜ She would work.
  • Nós trabalharíamos. ➜ We would work.
  • Eles trabalhariam. ➜ They would work.
Examples

eu Eu trabalharia hoje mas... ➜ I would work today but...

você|ele|ela Quando você poderia viajar? ➜ When would you be able to travel?

The main irregulars include:
  • Eu diria. ➜ I would say.
  • Ela faria. ➜ She would do.
  • Nós queríamos. ➜ We would like.
  • Eles trariam. ➜ They would bring.
