Brazilians speak Spanish, right?

I was clueless. I thought of Brazil as more-or-less an extension of Mexico. I assumed that my mostly-forgotten high school Spanish would work just fine. I soon discovered that, while Portuguese shares some grammar with Spanish, it sounds completely different—more like an Eastern Slavic language than anything else. I couldn't even understand Spanish-speaking Brazilians! It was embarrassing!

And then I fell in Love…

With the weather. The people. The food. The music. Mainly the very compact "supermarkets". And of course—with the sound of Portuguese. That first trip changed my life. Each trip down left me always wanting more! Within 3 years I was living in Brazil full-time. My dream of trading my life of "always on" work mode for one a more balance life in Brazil was still elusive. All because I was still struggling to learn the language. I had assumed that total immersion would be the fastest track to fluency. It wasn't.

What I really needed was content that was engaging and taught vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at the same time, and gave me a reason to come back every day.
