We Americans are so lazy. We get away with saying so much with so little. I probably use the word, kind a dozen times every day. But in Brazil, there are several more options used to say,

What kind? in Portuguese.

What kind of cheese do you want?
I like all kinds of science fiction movies.
It's a kind of low-carb restaurant.

Two main ways that you can express what kind /type get used the most:

tipo > type, kind
perfil > type, kind, profile

In English it might seem weird or outdated to use profile to express kind or, type.

Let's start using it right now:

É esse perfil que você procura? ➜ Is he/she the kind you're looking for?
Não é esse perfil (de trabalho) que eu quero. ➜ That's not the type of job I want.
Ela é o perfil que compra nosso produto. ➜ She's the kind of person that buys our product.

But we can also use tipo to express these as well:

É esse tipo que você procura? ➜ Is he/she the kind you're looking for?
Não é esse tipo (de trabalho) que eu quero. ➜ That's not the type of job I want.
Ela é o tipo de pessoa que compra nosso produto. ➜ She's the kind of person that buys our product.

And for sure, tipo feels like the more natural word to use here. But be aware that in Portuguese, you will hear perfil almost as often as tipo in examples like these above.

Now lets' continue these conversations:

É esse tipo que você procura? > Procuro esse perfil sim!
Não é esse tipo (de trabalho) que eu quero. > Quero outro perfil de serviço.
Ela é o tipo de pessoa que compra nosso produto. > Na verdade, têm vários tipos (perfís) que compram nosso produto mas, proncipalmente é tipo ela.

This last one is pretty advanced. The first sentence could also have been said more simply:

Ela é o perfil de nosso cliente.

***Note also the gender of these words: o perfil, o tipo.

Both are masculine. So, even if you are talking about, for example, a type of woman - you would say:

Ela é esse tipo/perfil de mulher.

Ele é esse tipo/perfil de homem.
