de novo in portuguese

There are so many different ways to express again/another time that it can get confusing. Let's focus on the four most common ways that Brazilians say one more time. In order:

(1) de novo
(2) mais uma vez
(3) outra vez
(4) novamente

Can we just use any of these in all situations? Sim... quase. Use what you're comfortable with and don't try to be fancy 😉

Exemplos.
Você está aqui de novo? > You're here again?
Ela vai fazer a prova novamente. > He's going to do the test again.

NOVAMENTE is a bit more formal.

Vamos tentar mais uma vez. > Let's try one more time.
Ele se mudou outra vez. > He moved again.

NOTE that it's outrA because VEZ is feminine.

Let's see if we can say the same thing using all four of these!

I'm going to travel to Rio again.

de novo: Eu vou viajar pro Rio de novo.
novamente: Eu vou viajar pro Rio novamente.
mais uma vez: Eu vou viajar pro Rio mais uma vez.
outra vez: Eu vou viajar pro Rio outra vez.

More difficult:

I failed the test and had to do it over again.

de novo: Fui reprovado no teste e tive que fazer de novo.
novamente: Fui reprovado no teste e tive que fazer novamente.
mais uma vez: Fui reprovado no teste e tive que fazer mais uma vez.
outra vez: Fui reprovado no teste e tive que fazer outra vez.
